The 1,401-square-foot semi-penthouse was gutted to the studs and transformed into a two-bedroom space. The clients wanted more freedom to cook and entertain, so the previous footprint—three bedrooms, small kitchen and dining room—was opened up for a new spacious kitchen with a bar peninsula and a dining room/office with a built-in desk that doubles as a sideboard during parties. This space can be easily converted back to a bedroom if required for resale by adding a wall and door where a glass panel serves as an airy partition.
Multi-functionality is key throughout this downtown-Vancouver condo. The smoked-glass screen divides the entry and the dining room, while also adding interest. Other dramatic touches are found in the dark ambience of the powder room, where a custom-finish burnt-and-scraped wood vanity and inky herringbone tile contrast with a white organic-shaped vessel sink. A polished-marble fireplace in the living room adds to the slick, city vibe.
The sleekness is tempered with more subdued materials, such as fabric wall-covering in the master bedroom and white-oak flooring and millwork. The spa-like ensuite has limestone and porcelain tile that mimics wood. The ridged tiles extend across the wall into the shower and wrap beneath the freestanding tub for a warm wooden-box effect.
