Perched beside to the wooded enclave of the endowment lands by the University of British Columbia on Vancouver’s west side, this new build is a second collaboration with repeat clients. The west-coast modern home, 5,000 square feet for a family of five (six bedrooms and bathrooms with a basement zone for teenagers, complete with pingpong, pinball and gaming area), embraces the idyllic parkside location.
Grand windows and high ceilings capture the view on the main floor. The expansive, open space is partitioned (office, kitchen, living and dining rooms) with wood-panelled walls, niches and slatted screens. Custom millwork—all bleached-white oak—flanks the two-sided fireplace and entranceway and sets a warm tone. The same wood is used for the walls, floors and stairs throughout, and echoed in the fireplace’s limestone facade and concrete hearth.
Limestone is repeated in the kitchen, wrapped around the hood fan, and its softness is picked up in a pale-grey tiled backsplash that adds texture to the muted palette. Cast-concrete light fixtures over the island continue the quiet tone. The light-filled interior balances the dark forest outside for a welcoming airiness that’s sophisticated yet relaxed.
