Set on a corner lot on a quiet street in the resort town of Whistler, this new-build, two-storey house was designed as the primary residence for a family of three. At 5,000 square feet—with five bedrooms (including two principal suites), six bathrooms, two laundry rooms and an elevator—there’s also ample space to accommodate visiting relatives throughout the year.
The inspiration was a modern ski chalet, inspired by a rustic-yet-refined style that’s characteristic of the Italian Dolomites. Light oak wood throughout gives the space an understated warmth, with unique details like a fluted-wood hood fan and a custom slatted-wood entry wall that lets light in while making a bold statement. Custom millwork in a Shinnoki ivory-oak veneer continues the minimalist feel, along with soft-hued materials that include Gascogne blue limestone, matte-finish Silestone and Caesarstone countertops, and warm-grey Fior Di Bosco marble in the living room fireplace.
The muted palette continues in the furniture, such as a white-oak Bensen coffee table and Blu Dot sectional sofa in a dove grey. This tranquil colour scheme is then contrasted with pops of black—the blackened-steel fireplace and staircase, two-storey accent wall, dark-hued pieces that range from a Vitra lounge chair to backsplashes, window frames, fixtures and faucets—and bright iridescence in the orbs of striking light fixtures.
All these elements of light and dark come together for a sophisticated take on the alpine aesthetic. Outside, dark fencing shelters a lap pool, matte-black outdoor shower and cozy fireplace that extend the living space of this resort-home hideaway.
