A new build in Kitsilano, Vancouver, we designed this 4,400-square-foot detached home to seamlessly fit into the neighbourhood’s Craftsman-era roots. A timeless aesthetic was important to the clients and became the basis for an interior design that reflects this traditional style with an updated, modern edge.
The spacious floor-plan includes an informal great room that combines kitchen, dining and family rooms within one space. A generous entry with a side office just off the front door gives the business-owning clients a space to work from home and still be close to their growing family.
The entire living space employs a palette of light and bright finishes: white oak and light-grey lacquered millwork. These are juxtaposed with black metal details: a Serge Mouille-inspired light fixture, stair railings and glass doors with mullions. The interior doors are airy while still providing a separation between spaces, like the living room and the rest of the main floor. This set-aside room is designed for quiet reading or playing music on the baby grand piano.
Upstairs, the master bedroom has a large ensuite bathroom that includes a walk-in steam shower, freestanding tub and water closet. A dressing table next to the window takes advantage of ample natural light.
Everywhere, lightness and openness are celebrated. Beams in the vaulted ceiling of the master bedroom add visual interest and highlight spaciousness. That lofty height is then made cozy with blackout power blinds controlled by remote. Also on the uppermost level: a laundry room and two kids’ bedrooms with ensuite.
Downstairs, the basement is all fun and games. A full-on man-cave has a hidden wine cellar, whiskey bar, surround-sound and drop-down projection screen. For her, there’s an exercise room with ballet barre.

The p22d team was indispensable in helping us through a challenging first house build. We were so happy with the experience that we’ve been coming back ever since. Denise and Sarah bring a wealth of design knowledge, creativity, and solutions to any problem that gets in the way. They are unflappable in the face of a challenge, and they do it with kindness, and a wicked sense of humour. - Janice & James
